Some of the best biggest waves ridden around South Africa recently have not been at the usual suspects, such as Sunset and Dungeons. Sean Holmes and David Smith went exploring the other day and found what is arguably one of the gnarliest waves on our long and mysterious coastline. Sean gives us a brief description of his session at an epic secret spot.

Another beautiful day in the Western Cape and after checking out the charts, we to decided to head East and check out a spot that has been showing some incredible potential.

It started with an early morning wake up call. David Smith, Myself and Greg Bertish ventured out into the unknown and yes, we were pleasantly surprised by our discovery! 15-20ft A-Frame Perfection, with a few bigger sets. Warm water, a fresh offshore breeze and clear skies blessed us for the entire day.

I got caught on my very first wave, smashed and spat out the back only to be stared down by a 20ft barreling top to bottom beast of a wave. It mowed me down, snapped my board, worked me over and 3 waves later I was lying on the beach with my leash attached to only the last 30cm remaining from the tail of my once beautiful board.

This is a serious wave with enormous amounts of power. Pound for pound, it’s as heavy as its gets and as good as any wave I have surfed around the world!
