9MilesProject4thAnnualSurfChallengeFamilyDay2The Cup is an initiative between Nigel Savel of 9Miles Project and Rory Heard of the Share The Stoke Foundation, and forms part of several new additions to the Family Day this year.

Savel, who started 9Miles in 2013 as a way out of gangsterism and drugs in his community, said another addition to the Family Day this y ear was what they were calling Acoustic Sunset.

"This is a platform for local artists and musicians to take the stage and perform for the people free of charge, from dancers to poets, and hip hop rappers. The concert ends the day and there is no better combination than good music, good food and tons of positivity."

The NSRI Strandfontein will put on an exhibition and a live rescue demonstration. There will be sandcastle building for the children, and a Treasure Hunt, while "Live Graffiti will be done by our talented local artists" to "unlock minds and create a space for creativity".

Free surfing lessons will be conducted by professional instructors. Savel invited all outreach surf projects to participate in the competition, which would give the children a chance to create bonds with students from all over South Africa.

"The objective of this event is to create an ambiance where friends and family can come together to indulge in a day filled with good energy and experience different mediums of the creative arts such as music, spoken word and dance.

"In addition, it serves to ignite an interest in surfing, other water sports and recreational activities amongst the youth. Visitors are also educated on the importance of preserving the ocean whilst connecting with other community members and families from surrounding areas."
