The next call for the Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa is a few hours away, so lets talk stock at where we're at after Jordy Smith's imperious surfing that catapulted him into the Round of 32.

Jordy only got a 7.33 for the ride but he's into Round 4. The new part-time resident of the North Shore has spent countless countless hours freesurfing the ‘Seven Mile Miracle’ and its paying dividends. It also proves there is no substitute for hard work and dedication when it comes to that heavy North Pacific energy.

The crew of South Africans in the event are taking inspiration from the others, and are steadily working their way through the field. David Van Zyl, sensational winner of the Vans Pro at Sunset event has made it to Round 4. So have Dylan Lightfoot and Beyrick de Vries. A crunch heat will be Heat 4. With awful luck of the draw, three Saffas must surf: Lightfoot, De Vries and Smith. The bonus bummer is that one of the form surfers at Haleiwa so far, Jack Freestone (AUS), is the fourth.

In possibly a few hours time (around 7pm ZA time) Mikey February surfs in the first heat of Round 4. There is a 3-5' NW swell just starting to pick up, and with moderate east winds becoming fresh, we could be on for the day. Mikey has to negotiate a tricky heat against Kelly Slater, but hopefully will have the better of Cole Houshmand (USA) and Alonso Correa (Spain). Matt McGillivray is the other Saffa who must still surf Round 3. He will surf in Heat 12.

For the other Saffas, Adin Masencamp was knocked out in Round 3 and Jordy Maree got as far as Round 2.

A standout in professional surfing for years, Jordy has yet to clinch the elusive Vans Triple Crown title. With a win in 2016 at the Vans World Cup of Surfing, he is eyeing a maiden win this season. “It’d be awesome,” he continued. “I’ve been the bridesmaid a bunch of times. It’d be really cool to get that victory.”

Top-seeded surfers have stolen the show in the WSL Men’s Qualifying Series QS10,000 event, with next-to-perfect performances from Freestone and Nat Young (USA).

Haleiwa is a rite of passage for surfers. It equalizes the playing field since challenging conditions pit competitors against the ocean, rather than one another.

The Vans Triple Crown has been running for 37 consecutive years on Oahu's North Shore and determines the best competitive surfer at three defining and world-class waves: Haleiwa, Sunset and Pipeline. The Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa Ali'i Beach has a holding window from November 13 - 24 and will see a winner emerge to take the lead on the VTCS rankings. The second stop of the series is the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach from November 25 - December 7, and the final event is the Billabong Pipe Masters at Banzai Pipeline from December 8 - 20.

Witness the action LIVE via state-of-the-art broadcast on WorldSurfLeague.com, VansTripleCrownOfSurfing.com, Facebook.com/wsllive and on the free WSL app.
