Wavescape - Surfing in South Africa

Sat, 9 December 2017

Wavescape is honoured to screen blockbusting doccie Bunker77 one-time only tonight - the story of Bunker Spreckels, the maverick surfing pioneer and playboy who died aged 27.

PLAYBOY: Bunker Spreckels stepson to Clark Gable and possibly inventor of the Fish.

bunker1200bunkerSpreckelsbunker77-posterFilmmaker Takuji Masuda, with help from people like Ed Norton, has produced a classic that will resonate with South Africans. According to the spikerised bio:

"This is the true story of young American rebel Bunker Spreckels, Clark Gable’s stepson and heir to a giant sugar fortune. A bitter-sweet biographical account of one of surfing’s most flamboyant, and most controversial surf stars. He exuded authentic originality, like a cross between James Dean and Andy Warhol.

"He danced on the sea like no one else and soared across the night sky like a angry meteorite. Includes epic archival footage of charging Hawaii, and a wild reckless ride through South Africa in a Mercedes waving cash and a handgun. Of course, it didn’t end well. He died aged 27."

“Takuji Masuda’s captivating documentary traces the steep arc of enigmatic ’70s surf punk.” - Salon

"This seminal cultural surfing tale using never-before-seen footage from famed surf photographer Art Brewer taken during Spreckels’ last years, Takuji Masuda tells the story of the young wave rider while trying to put his extravagance in its proper cultural context.” - Santa Barbara Independent

"Bunker Spreckels was an American surfer and an early pioneer of a surfboard design which some people believe eventually led to the creation of the fish style of board. He was the great-grandson of German-born sugar baron Claus Spreckels." - Wikipedia

"An adoring tribute to surfing’s most self-destructively maverick playboy and a relentlessly lively dive into the sport’s pre-commercialism golden days." — The Hollywood Reporter

Endangered Spirit Presents

A film by Takuji Masuda. Starring Laird Hamilton, Tony Alva, Johnny Knoxville, C.R. Stecyk III, Art Brewer. Narrated by: Mike Judge. Music by Adam Peters. Produced with Joan Spreckels, and John Gable. Executive Producers: Anthony Kiedis, Stephen Gaghan, Trevor Groth, and Edward Norton.

Bunker3Bunker77 is the wild true story of a young American rebel seeking freedom, love, and authenticity in a chaotic world. Bunker Spreckels, Clark Gable's stepson and heir to a sugar fortune, turned his back on expectations and grew into a controversial surf star who expressed complete originality, like a cross between James Dean and Andy Warhol. He danced on the sea like no one else even as his mysterious and surreal persona exploded to consume him.

Bunker survived off the jungle while pushing the limits of Hawaii’s most dangerous waves, raced across remote Africa in a Mercedes waving cash and a handgun on a pioneering expedition to J-Bay, and churned his way through a Los Angeles filled with passion, decadence, and reckless experimentation. While Bunker mentored skateboard legend Tony Alva to his world championship and dove headlong into collaborations with film auteur Kenneth Anger, his dynamic life blazed to uncontainable proportions.
