Finger on the pulse

thumb_DeenagainTue, 21 December 2010

It’s late Sunday afternoon and the wind has finally dropped. A fresh batch of groundswell has sneaked under the radar and unloads over a sandbar that has had weeks of grooming. Simon Robb as usual has her finger on the pulse and captures a few old school weekend warriors and the new school rippers as they scramble to reap the rewards of being in the right place at the right time.

Busting out in the Boland

Those in the know, or those with a sense of adventure, can find waves anywhere and pretty much surf everyday, if time allowed. The Cape Peninsula has so many combinations, up, down and around its coastline, that when they come together, certain spots can produce memorable sessions when everywhere else is just plain flat. Marcel Habets stumbled upon such a session recently in the Boland. Warm water, low tide, offshore and just a few dudes in the line up. Nice!

Mini Summer Session

summerseshthumbSun, 12 December 2010

Still suffering from post-sandblast trauma on Sunday, Spike took a few shots on his phone from the rocks overlooking a cranking 3-4' wave somewhere near Cape Town. It was the first surf in many a day, and what a relief to experience a wave for a change after days of flat windblasted seas. Even the lizzards seemed stoked.

Clifton 4th Beach Photos

Check all the pics from the Wavescape surf film night on the beach. It was a glorious evening, well, it would have been had there not been a ripping southeaster around the peninsula. Despite a few gusts, about 2,500 people enjoyed Lino, I surf bercause ... Andy Irons, part 2 of Chasing the Swell, and Scratching the Surface with Julian Wilson.

Light at the end of the Tunnel

Simone Robb goes in search of wave’s in-between ridging high pressure systems. She finds tubes, airs and inspiration to help maintain the momentum through the days of blue bottle infused onshore mush of the False Bay and the ice cream headache inducing flatness of the Atlantic. The beauty about the shape of the Cape Peninsula is that there usually always is a wave somewhere, no matter what the conditions are.

Axel Irons born on Day 1 at Pipe

florence4638pipe10kirstin_lThu, 9 December 2010

Day One of the Billabong Pipeline Masters will go down in surfing history, not for results, but for a simple symbol of rebirth in the face of death: in the early hours on the island Kauai, the son of Andy Irons was born. Andrew Axel Irons was born to Lyndie Irons, widow of three time ASP World Champ. Bruce Irons, Andy's boet, was there before flying to the North Shore to surf his wildcard slot. He lost his first round heat to Tom Whitaker. See some shots from Day 1.

Wavescape Art Surfboards

boardthumbWed, 1 December 2010

The 11 surfboards by 13 artists represent a unique mix of genres and styles in South African art from the weirdly apocalyptic Only the Mystic Duiker can Save Us from What We Have Become by Andy Mason to the cute but cruel piscine iconography of 5000 Leagues by Kim Longhurst, and more besides. More on the auction.

Dodging Bluebottles

According the new school, onshore is the new offshore, according to me, when its been flat for the past 3 weeks, I will pretty much surf anything, even if anything is a combination of mushy closeouts, swarms of blue bottles and the ever lurking presence of the man in the grey suit. Last week False Bay got whipped up into an onshore soup bowl and it was just what the Cape Doctor ordered with surfers from all over the peninsula making the mission to the chop suey main course at Kalk Bay. Simone Robb got out of the wind and enjoyed some beers at the Bell while capturing the action.

Keeping true to the book, the party was rocking and about as funky fresh alternative as you can get. Mike Ellis took the photos.
