Wavescape - Surfing in South Africa

Thu, 8 June 2017

The Cape super storm has brought solid walls winding down the point at Supertubes and the green light has been called for the JBU Supertrial Powered By Monster Energy, writes Spike.

The Cape super storm has swept in, bringing giant ambient seas and westerly gales. Cape St Francis, the promontary of coast that sticks out into the open ocean, is awash in rain and stormy weather. However, its a normal wintery day at protected J-Bay, which is set away from the open ocean, with stiff offshores and six foot sets running.

As the storm moves eastward below the country, the swell direction will start becoming more southerly and the final of the format-shortened event could be held in bigger surf at roughly lunchtime today.

The decision was made by contest organiser Koffie Jacobs at 9am this morning: "The waves are big, there are non-stop sets and we're going to get the show on the road. There is a chance that it might get a bit too big this afternoon, so we're running at nine o'clock."

The forecast calls for moderating winds and increasingly consistent 6-8' sets as the direction goes southerly and the storm winds subside.

First prize in the JBU Supertrial consists of a wild card into the Corona Open JBay as well as the valuable Championship Tour competitive experience that comes with it. The Corona Open JBay has a waiting period from 12th – 23rd July, and is part of the JBay Winterfest.
