Port Elizabeth

Image

Provided by Vodacom, this cam is mounted on the mast that looks out over the beachfront close to the pier. The camera pans to various positions that give a good indication of what the swell is doing, and you can also use it to spy on traffic. Refreshes every three minutes. If you get the traffic, wait until it pans to the beach.

I see the camera seems to be panning around to millers now but its getting most of the building into the frame. Not good.
At least thats what it looks like.

Ah well doesn't effect me. If someone did set up a cam I wonder how long it would take before it got smashed?

Remember reading somewhere that surfers are selfish, well now I truly know why the person wrote that. Think I'm one of the most selfish surfers out there.

Think I'll put a cam up and then when the waves are good just paste some old "flat day" footage up.

Surfcams need to be banned! The crowds are already unbearable with the increased accuracy of surf reports!

Its not that simple, you need a webcam, a suitable place to mount it, a pc to link it to or if you can get a cam with a builtin webserver, then you need power and you need a way to send the captured images over the internet to the webserver, to be displayed. thats usually done vir 3g.cellphone, or else the cam must be linked to pc that has internet access.Quoting smurf:
Does anyone have any idea how much a webcam would cost?
Who else uses this cam?
It would improve greatly if it was pointed more at millers and not the pier.

Vic bay has a webcam so do many other spots. Me thinks it's just a matter of time before we get webcams put up everywhere. Overseas they seem to have cams everywhere. The other option is to befriend a local surfer that lives at the beach then you get them to notify you when there are waves.

Good call smurf. Oliva, consider the following: low res of the webcam doesn't really assist in knowing whether any of PE's surf spots are actually working or not, just a general indication of the Pier, Humewood, Denville and Fence have a breaking wave; only provides a NW view of Algoa Bay which doesn't give a good indication of the arrival of SW swell and to some extent S swell. By having the webcam pan further east we would not know whether pipe is working or not, we would simply have an idea of when S or SW swell has filtered into the bay. Dont worry, when the bay is cooking I won't be joining you at Pipe.

I was going to set up a twitter surf report for the bay that was going to be updated daily with pics and all that and a new tweet if the conditions changed but, I was met with heavy resistance so I decided against it. Probably would have got bliksemed if i had gone ahead.

Surfers wont allow that to happen. Its gonna increase the crowd at the pipe which we dont want.

Fully agree with po10cy. Having the cam pan east to show Pollok beach would be most helpful and greatly appreciated by the PE surfing community I'm sure.

would be awesome if the cam could be moved to show clubhouse and pipe.

the camera zooms in on the piers. Just give it a few minutes, screengrabs are taken at different angles. Looks like PE is cooking!

how must a person see these waves? the camera needs to zoom in some more so that us surfers can get a clear view of the wave
