Pull in to the Wavescapes Surf Film Festival for a feast of epic new films between 5 and 14 December in Cape Town. We have 19 screenings of 14 films in three venues around the city, including the outdoor screening at Clifton Fourth Beach at 8.30pm on Friday 5 December (Saturday 6th is a weather day in case the SE pumps on Friday). The indoor screenings start that Sunday 7th December at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay (R25). Last show at the Bell is Wednesday 10th. Then it's on to the Labia, with two shows daily at 6pm and 8pm from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14 December (R25 a ticket).

NB The first 500 tickets purchased via phone bookings at the Labia will receive a free surfing movie courtesy Hurley.

Enjoy the epic art exhibition of nine beautifully crafted egg surfboards shaped by Greg Stokes of Magic Shot and decorated by top up and coming South African comic, graffiti and other artists. Included with the boards will be a display of haunting shark photographs - in large format and framed - by eminent marine biologist and Save Our Seas Foundation chief photographer Tom Peschak. The exhibition will be held at the VEO Gallery from Wednesday 26 November until Wednesday 3 December, when surfer comedian Mark Sampson will auction the boards, as well as the best five framed images by Tom Peschak.

The festival exhibits wave riding in its many forms, from artistic eulogies to gritty doccies about surfing in the Vietnam War.

There are big wave tow-ins at scary spot Aileens in Ireland and classic longboarding in two-foot Robertsport in Liberia; the lanquid lyricism of longboard ballet in Beneath The Surface and an uplifting South African story about the Zulu surf riders of Umzumbe.

Through the films Sharkwater and Shark Angels, Wavescapes affirms its stand against the slaughter of sharks and a commitment to reveal the shark’s pivotal role in the future survival of not just the ocean, but possibly even the planet.

Wavescapes launches on friday 5 December with a special outdoor screening at Clifton Fourth Beach (Saturday 6th is a weather day in case that southeaster is pumping!)

We move to the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay from Sunday 7 December until Wednesday 10 (tickets at the door R25) before returning to town for screenings twice a day at the Labia Cinema (R25 per screening which often includes two films). You can book for the Labia (call 021 424-5927) but the Brass Bell is first come first serve at the door.

Check the synopses (includes venue and times per film) and video teasers. Click here for the programme showing all days of the festival, including the exhibition.
