It’s almost that time again in Durban, when the crisp winter seas beckon and the South Africa’s premier surf culture event, the Wavescapes Surf Film Festival pulls in.
It was a beautiful Cape Town evening for the surf film at Clifton 4th Beach tonight, writes Wavescape technical dude Paul van Jaarsveld, who lives in J-Bay, and gives us a fresh perspective on a magical evening.

With the recent controversy surrounding the Copenhagen Climate Summit top of mind, Capetonian surfer, activist and creative director Conn Bertish has come up with an innovative idea to highlight the plight of our oceans.
The eye man continues on his morphing journey through the sixth edition of the Wavescapes Surf Film Festival. Looking through the lens of the surfer dude, we look back on a time when the oceans teemed with life.
The eye woman arrives in the artowrk of the festival for the first time. The girl in the not so itsy bitsy polka dot bikini denotes the new wave of the new era of surfing for everyone and anybody.
The sixth Wavescapes Surf Film Festival screens 16 films in 22 slots with two extra shows of the Drifter, making for a total of surf films showing 24 times. In the tradition of the surf film, many are short, making for a double bill, while feature length films get a solo slot.
The Wavescapes Surf Art Exhibition culminates at Depasco Cafe in Cape Town today. The amazing ice board, which highlights the need to stop global warming and save our seas, is melting. We present the synopses of all 15 films (with a photo and link to a video teaser) to be screened at the Wavescapes Surf Film Festival starting 2 December, kicking off with the classic Thomas Campbell film The Present at Clifton Fourth Beach 9pm Friday 11 December (the art exhibition runs at Depasco Cafe from the 2nd to the 7th, when a special charity auction takes place).
