Budding surf pro Avuyile Ndamase, or Avo, has surfed since he was 8. He feels part of the sea, even after a shark took his brother in their childhood town of Port St Johns. At dawn daily, Avo paddles out at his East London spot from where he watches the city awake. Surfing is "freedom", and the only way to see the world is from inside the barrel.
