Elands Bay, the sleepy little fishing village up the West Coast with the perfect left hand point break has become the escape plan for many city surfers and travellers from around the world. But as with any escape plan, decent self catering accommodation is always a problem. Benguela and the Surf Shack, which is a short 5 minute walk from the point, offers the perfect solution for that sneaky weekend getaway, or the extended break away from the rat race of big city life. Wednesday 21 July 2010 We catch up with Marcel Habets on his quest for fish in Namibia. This time he happens on Nams most popular wave, GUNS, complete with 8 gnarled locals, a dog and the inevitable brandy pickled fishermen from the North West Province. Sunday 11 December 2010 Marcel Habets loves to travel. He recently packed the wife, kids, brother and mates into his Pajero and went off on a "fishing trip" in Namibia. Boy did he score, but did he catch any fish? Sun 6 June 2010 Chad Marais, the creator of suss.co.za, sold some stuff and booked a place on a surf adventure of a life time. On his return, we managed to get him to spill the beans on what it takes to do a boat trip in the Mentawai islands of Indonesia. June 2010 After a lull of 12 years, the Travel Guru goes back to southeast Sumbawa (Lakey Peak Area) and finds that it is still bagus, and still one of the best surf destinations around. Here are some snap shots from Frankie's missions to paradise and back. Wednesday 21 October 2009 Every year thousands of surfers, bodyboarders and photographers make
the annual pilgrimage to Hawaii’s North Shore. Despite cheap holidays in Indo and the chicken run to Australia, the North
Shore is perceived as the ultimate proving ground for South Africans. 31 August 2009 Eating alone is pleasant when you're looking for solitude. Having mates tuck in with you is a pleasure. Then there is this dining experience: boatloads of tourists chomping at the bit for morsels of the KFC buffet, with only the whiff of the colonel's special herbs and spices to go on, or maybe the left-over mayo sachets trampled underfoot by the stampede. I've been eating like the latter of late, says Glen Thompson Sunday 16 August 2009 - Saturday 22 August 2009 Opportunities don’t magically appear, but if you go with the flow, good things happen.
A few weeks back, I was up the West Coast, chilling out at the Surf Shack, vainly waiting for the swell to drop. I was hoping to score the point all to myself. By Pierre Marqua Friday 31 July 2009 After watching Occy tearing up the long, fast and barrelling lefts of St Leu in Reunion, Chris Bertish finally got his turn to tick it off his list. 9 February 2009 The Bertish brothers - Chris, Conn and Greg - escape to South Sumatra to score some uncrowded barrels. By Conn Bertish. The secret ingredient that keeps the soul healthy is finding balance in our crazy, mixed-up lives. Director of True Blue Surf Travel Greg Bertish travels to the golden island of Mauritius, where his biased belief that it is a land of cellophane-wrapped resorts and tourists traps is turned on its head. The promise of a secret got Marlon Deckard going on a trip to Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. He found was he was looking for, and more besides. Pictures by Michele and Marlon. Monday 1 June 2008 Big waves are moving mountains, but the 670 foot abseil at Maletsunyane waterfall is a static (and sadistic) twist to the concept of taking off on a big one, discovers Spike. On the mountains above Ceres and the Hex River Valley, severe winter storms dump a 3 foot layer of snow. Spike joins a group of snowboarders who trek up a mountain that has no ski lifts and no prepared slopes, just landmines made of rocks and bushes. But hey, who cares about being tired or sore? This is Africa! Monday 3 April 2006 A group of seven surfing 'bullets' survived a mid-life crisis recently. However, it was not the pending arrival of menopause, but a drama that happened to coincide with their middle-age during a surf trip to the Mentawai Islands. Wavescape editor Spike reports. Trundling along a winding dust road, testimony to a dry winter, we
topped the hill and stopped. The distant line-up had not fully
imprinted the message on our brains before we began emitting a
caterwauling cacophony of high-pitched hoots. A cow gazed stonily at
us. It seemed to say ‘Naught bru! These Two-Legs are crazy.’ By Spike 29 March 2008 A hardy group of surfers dig for liquid gems on the desolate Diamond Coast. By Ross Frylinck. | |
