The Escape Plan

thumb_BenguelaAndShackM1Wednsday 3 November 2010

Elands Bay, the sleepy little fishing village up the West Coast with the perfect left hand point break has become the escape plan for many city surfers and travellers from around the world. But as with any escape plan, decent self catering accommodation is always a problem. Benguela and the Surf Shack, which is a short 5 minute walk from the point, offers the perfect solution for that sneaky weekend getaway, or the extended break away from the rat race of big city life.

Big waves are moving mountains, but the 670 foot abseil at Maletsunyane waterfall is a static (and sadistic) twist to the concept of taking off on a big one, discovers Spike.

Snowed immaculate

On the mountains above Ceres and the Hex River Valley, severe winter storms dump a 3 foot layer of snow. Spike joins a group of snowboarders who trek up a mountain that has no ski lifts and no prepared slopes, just landmines made of rocks and bushes. But hey, who cares about being tired or sore? This is Africa!

Kei the Beloved Country

Trundling along a winding dust road, testimony to a dry winter, we topped the hill and stopped. The distant line-up had not fully imprinted the message on our brains before we began emitting a caterwauling cacophony of high-pitched hoots. A cow gazed stonily at us. It seemed to say ‘Naught bru! These Two-Legs are crazy.’ By Spike
