Wavescape - Surfing in South Africa

Melkbos to Agulhas

Thur 24 July 2014

Strong NW winds build Thursday to neargale force. More winter comes. Surf looks messy 3-4' or so with windsea rapidly washing over the top of it. Muizies may have fleabitten offshore 2' lines. Friday cold frontal weather and howling onshore west kills it dead. Swell very west 6-8' and therefore missing False Bay which is clean but flattened by stiff offshores. Saturday more grunt again in surf to 8' and hope that the NW not too strong early, which will mean fun on open reefs in south, and other spots that like NW, and Muizies clean 2' maybe 3' but the NW pumps again later. Sunday lots of 2-4' windswell or more around - a little chunky - and light SW breezes with soft bump. Muizies 2' and sort of clean. No great shakes but there are waves in light winds. Monday surf 3-4' going on 3-5' in arvi in mild SSE breezes freshening later. Muizies dies a soft slow burping death.

Are there any CSIR Buoy's between Kommetjie and Mosselbay? If so,where can we see that data?I need data for the Gansbaai area.

I was waiting for the swell to arrive at Big Bay, which is an indicator for other spots on the West Coast. False Bay has a wide swell window, so South swells reach Muizenberg, but not the West coast spots.

Mr Michel - you didn't look hard enough. From experience I know that around false bay, new swells take awhile to arrive. First thing on Friday morning there wee 1ft little windy buggers. Around 3 in the arvo, we got some fairly nice ,shark filled, high tide 2-3ft. However at around 5 was when it really turned on. The wind turned glassy, the tide was going out, and the swell had totally filled in and was pulsing 3-5ft. Even the sunset was perfect. And the best part was a usually uber crowded muizies was almost completely empty - I'm not sure whether it was the shark alarms that went off earlier, or if people gave up on the waves when they saw them in high tide. All I know is I scored PERFECT Muizenberg 4ft glassy with only a couple guys out, at around 5:30 to sundown ( both on Friday and Saturday) . So you just gotta know where to look.

Howzit Don, i am writing to you to let you know that what you're doing has inspired me! you are my idol and i long to be like you. i recently started kayaking and bought a rad beast of a kayak I call the white mamba (cos I'm white). I'm pumping iron 5 days of the week and then slaying on Zandvlei and the berg on the weekend. Did i mention my for-arms are huge, i recently choked a girl grom who tuned my white mamba so i can act as back up for you. I'm keen to hook up with you (not literally) and slay some johnnies that have ruined many of my kayak sessions. contact me on FaceBook at Jacques big bruv le coque or on twitter, @jaqueslebigcoque. I'm really looking forward to slaying some johnnies on the water and then slaying the betties at tinners.

keep clean Don, or how i will call you, DonJon

This is the most frustrating swell I have ever tracked. It just doesn't arrive.

Guys clearly Don "the Pro Kayaker" is a troll and you are constantly feeding him by taking his bait. Surely he has nothing better to do than troll this forum instead of going out and actually catching some waves.

Dear Don, you have clearly crossed the line when you decided to shoot that beautiful creature that God made. I had better not see you in the water anytime soon because I am fuming and wont hesitate to pop your oversized nut sack with your own paddle. Keep your eyes peeled, Im the one on the longboard!!!

Howzit Don, I was at Cape Point the other day and was fortunate enough to see you (well not so fortunate...) standing on the beach with your 'mustang' which just by the way looks like a homemade piece of kak, which my little daughter could make-O and I don't know wether or not you are colour blind but it is definitely pink! For anyone who is interested, I saw Don not fishing deep out at sea for sharks, but rather in a small rockpool with a little net. He then caught a tiny fish and threw his hands up in joy and then threw the fish on the rock? And then pulled his shirt off to reveal his less than impress body, which looks like a 10 year old boys!

Peace out Cape Point local

Howzit china's! Just dropping in to say that the response from my other comment is getting better just like the definition of my biceps ;) No one has been getting in my way for a few days. But now i have one other problem which is these herds of great whites that are getting in my way of shredding waves on the black mustang (my kayak) and is scaring the crowds away that come to watch me shred at my home break muizies. So I've decided to take the matter into my own massive hands and start to butcher these siff creatures. Shot one the other day of Cape point while I was surfing these 10ft waves. So just wanting to let Cape town know what I've been doing for the city and would like some appreciation. Not one to boast but it takes some big balls (which I have literally ) to slaughter these great whites to an absolute minim (almost to extinction).

Peace out

Thanks for the link to the buoys as they give near-realtime values. btw the day after Monday is usually Tuesday. The actual report for that day starts at the word "Pulsing..." The purple prose that preceeds is not necessary. :-)

Don...you can't be C-REE-US!! Were you brought up to be a self centred kayaker or did you just become that way after realising you don't have the ability to stand up (or kneel) on any flotation device other than sitting in a canoe? Have you heard of Theewaterskloof? - lots like you out that way - pay it a visit - you'll be right at home.

Good evening Don, Troll - or whatever you may be;

I have been Kayaking in Cape Town for several years and have (Thankfully) never heard of you or your supposed organisation. However if it does exist then I suspect that any of biceps owned by its members have developed more between between their ears than anywhere else. If your group of muscle bound piddlers does exist then perhaps you would be so bold as to tell me who its Chairperson is so that I can congratulate him on the intellectual superiority so clearly reflected on your assinine post.

May I, with the greatest of respect and deference, suggest that you take your incredible skill and power out to Cape Point - preferably just beyond Bellows in the middle of a winter Storm. I am sure that the whole of the Cape Town paddling community (the real one) will deeply mourn your timely passing.

:D

Howzit Paul. Im part of the AKP (Assosiation of kayaking professionals) and I have never herd of this rule about not being able to paddle in front of the pavilion (LOL). Kayaking is an art that i have perfected over the years and demands an unimaginable amount of power, skill, determination, bravery and massive biceps. Muizenberg is my spot which i am the local kayaker and which means young girls should not being getting in my way. If anyone tries to bounce me (Don) out of my local spot or gets in my way there will be kak. Just look out for the guy with the massive biceps who drives a mooi mercedes and Shreeeds waves on the black mustang (my kayak). Thanks a lot for understanding and be privileged that a professional kayaker calls muizies his home break. Peace out

+25 #329 Surfskis and SurfingPaul Weber 2014-01-03 12:28
Their used to be a rule at Muizies that the Skis and Kayaks that want to play in the surf had to move down to Sunset or further - the other day I was sitting paddling out in front of the pavilion on a busy day when a Ski almost decapitated a young girl. The paddler just smiled and paddles off. What can the surfer do? I paddle a ski and kayak myself and a few years ago was actually chased off by a lifesaver on a jetski. What has happened to this rule? Skis and Kayaks at speed are a danger to surfers. I think we should get a bit more assertive especially you guys who spend a lot of time on the backline. What do you guys think? In fairness the old hand surf skiers know the rule and stay away from The Corner. What do you guys think?
