A cooking SE swell is bearing down on Durban but the Cell C Goodwave remains on standby due to dodgy winds over the coming weekend and into next week.

Despite some exciting action on the swell charts, poor winds are forecast, and Contest Director Jason Ribbink has made the decision to remain on standby: "The swell models were looking very good for this upcoming storm, but unfortunately they have changed considerably, and the onshore winds will be up early on the days of good swell in Durban. We are not going to go on Amber Alert but we will continue to monitor the swell models. There is another storm approaching for the back half of next week that we are looking at with interest at this stage."

Official Cell C Goodwave surf forecaster Spike from www.wavescape.co.za concurs. "It is unfortunate that the onshore winds are going to be up so early. Much like the last swell we monitored for this contest, there will be great individual waves over the weekend and into next week, but with poor winds. There won't be a long enough window of good surf to run the tournament."

The Cell C Goodwave is a unique competition on the South African surfing calendar in that it has a one-year waiting period, it costs only R1 to enter, and first prize is R100k, the largest domestic prize in the country. The Cell C Goodwave has invited 32 surfers to compete in the tournament. Should some of these surfers not make it to the New Pier in Durban on the day, their slots will be filled up with the alternate surfers. Should there still be open slots, the contest director will choose walk-up entries on the day.

The Cell C Goodwave is rated as a World Surf League Specialty event, and a live webcast will be hosted on the WSL website: http://www.worldsurfleague.com/events/2017/spec/2348/cell-c-goodwave

The contest will be utilising a 4-man heat system, with 2 going through each heat. There will also be jet-ski assist for the competitors. It is imperative to have a full day’s worth of good waves at the New Pier to run the event to completion.

California Dreaming, overlooking New Pier on the beachfront, will host the competition on the day. Oakley and Sun International are both supporting sponsors. In addition, Cell C is also offering free Wi-Fi on the beach during the entire contest. Miss a 10-point ride, and watch the heat replays via the WSL app over the free Wi-Fi.
