Dave van Ginkel

BACKGROUND

Through surfing, Dave's interest in surfboards began early. He decided to leave his engineering studies to pursue his passion for the craft of surfboard making. At the time, he was working in board factories, making him one of the few shapers skilled in all areas of their construction. He has shaped for various international Red Bull Big Wave Africa contestants, as well as many of the local big wave riders, who revere Dave's shapes. That's quite a compliment from guys who need to keep it all together after dropping off the ledge of those brutes. Travels to the States keep him in touch with cutting edge design and, with this advantage, Dave is dedicated to making high quality surfboards that consistently perform in all conditions, ranging from one to thirty foot.

“I am blinded by spray as I take my final stroke over the ledge. The frigid offshores have held me in the lip once again. I rise to my board as the wave dredges out beneath my feet. Transferring my weight hard on my toe side rail I take a leap of faith. My rail effortlessly clings to the face of the icy water as I descend to the bottom. The wave is already churning off down the line as I set my rail. Seemingly an extension of my feet, the board grabs hard, drives off the bottom, and catapults me down the line. My mis-timed take-off has put me deeper than anticipated. I inch forward on the board, and begin to pump. There is no time lapse between the instinctive movements of my lower body and positive response of the board. I swiftly regain my speed and ground as the wave hammers down the shallow sand bank. Weaving through the glass cylinder, every subtle adjustment is countered with a perfect reaction from the vehicle beneath my feet. As I near the exit, the wave takes one last deep breath and exhales leaving me blinded once again in a swath of spray. I ghost-ride my way out into the channel wiping the water from my face. My body is shaking with excitement as I take a glance around. Nobody is watching, so I let out a small battle-cry and give a subtle fist pump. What a wave, and what a board."
