thumb_Matt_Holzman_10_IMG_1248_IBA_Pipeline_2012_Specker_nTuesday 21 February 2012.

The Banzai Pipeline went large and perfect for this year’s IBA Pipeline Pro. Wavescape presents our largest slideshow in a bid to portray the four days of madness that rocked the North Shore in the most awesome of ways. If a picture is worth a gazillion words, this is the Encyclopedia Britannica. And then some.

Mellow J-Bay moments

Surf photos in Jeffreys Bay

Monday 20 February 2012

We can´t complain about summer this year, but in J-Bay, lulls between swells have been long. There have been good forecasts, but the models were fickle, and swell direction was too West. Still, there were some mellow February vibes. Photos by Paul van Jaarsveld

Heat of the Moment

ultimatex-2-thMonday 20 February 2012

It was all in the heat of the moment as Stevo, Robin Taylor and Spike shoot the "high" action at Ultimate X in Cape Town on Saturday. The amount of air, the level of skill, and the sheer mullet-headed tenacity of these athletes is mind-boggling.

Myths and Facts

thumb_IMG_7141wsMonday 13 February 2012

The fat south swell this weekend was an epic fail, but deep in the Boland, it cooked. False Bay had waves, but never really got out of the stable, and many breaks were small and crowded. Stevo, not to be outdone by a myth, sniffed out solid surf deep in the heart of the Boland, with virtually no-one around.

One Hot Minute

thumb_IMG_8202Friday 10 February 2012

Last Sunday saw temperatures in Cape Town skyrocket and the masses descend on beaches all over the Peninsula. Robin Taylor took a drive out to the other side of the bay to discover the surfing was as hot as the day.

Weekend Warriors

thumb_MH0_2612Friday 03 February 2012

It’s the weekend baby! It’s time for all the desk jockeys and cubicle slaves to slap on the sun block and hit the beach with a vengeance. Marcel Habets tests out the new Nikon rig on the other side of False Bay last weekend.

So much for Funso.

thumb__MG_3121

Monday 30 January 2012.

After weeks of waiting, Funso’s swell finally arrived in Durban on the weekend. With every old local dashing back to Surf City for the swell of the year, Funso was an anti-climax, but the waves were good. Dawn Rouse took time out from shooting the QE2 to capture the charnas charging New Pier.

Smoke on the water

Ian Thurtell took a swim at the Rolling Retro 2012 to document all the cool cats and hipsters pulling off moves that sum up the surfing eras in unusually warm water off Llandudno. See the story by Spike here and another slideshow by Brenton Geach here

Good old Murphy

thumb_Cato-getting-a-thick-oneMonday 16 January 2012

The whole summer holiday, the winds were wrong and the swell was on vacation. The first week of the new work year starts and guess what happens. It’s cooking bru! Ian Thurtell got stuck in his office to bring us the proof that Murphy is a cruel joker.

Good things must end

thumb_IMG_2884-TomKingWednesday 11 January 2012

Yesterday was the last day of freedom for many, schools go back and the office cubicle is looming. Alan Robb made the most of the stunning Cape weather to capture the end of the holiday as it unfolded down at Long Beach.

Boland Betties

thumb_Bettys-03Monday 09 January 2012

As the New Year arrived so did an unseasonal North Wind. Those in the know capitalised on the wintery conditions and scored waves where there shouldn’t have been. Marcel Habets took the photos.

Where is summer

thumb_dave-richards-floats2Friday, 06 January 2012

2012 kicks off with the question of where is summer?  Sure the beaches are packed with tourists and you can’t move at the malls without encountering a GP 4x4 but what has happened to the Cape Doctor? Ian Thurtell takes the first swim of the year at a wobbly beachbreak down south.

Sublime

thumb_29112011_SouthCoast_0047Tuesday 13 December 2011

In aesthetics, the sublime is the quality of greatness, whether physical, moral, intellectual, metaphysical, aesthetic, spiritual or artistic. The term refers to a greatness beyond all possibility of calculation, measurement or imitation. Justin Kluzner and friends score all of that and more in a recent session.

Icy Blues

thumb_stellar_waveTuesday 22 Movember 2011

The steely blue southeaster returns with its frigid weapon: the ice headache, as Ian Thurtell found out on a mission into the cold, crisp wavescapes of the Cape Peninsula deep in the south.

Show And Tell

komdown-thTuesday 22 November 2011

A motled collective of gnarled nautical detritus gathered in Kommetjie on the weekend for a surf contest with a difference, a big difference. Simone Robb was there to get some shots of the peculiarly dressed participants of the Kommetjie Showdown.
