The family of lifeguard Sikhanyiso Bangilizwe, the young man who died in a shark attack in Port St Johns in January, has received R15,200 in donations from Wavescape readers.

Co-owner of Amapondo Backpackers at Second Beach Annie Oakley, on behalf of the NGO site Givengain.com and Wavescape, yesterday presented Sikhanyiso's sister Primrose with the money. The family were deeply moved at the support shown by strangers who came to their aid after a bull shark killed Sikhanyiso, the sole breadwinner for the family, at Second Beach on January 24th. One donor from the United States even set up a recurring US$100 payment to the family every month, which is a lifeline.
Annie and her partner TimWhitaker are now working with the Iliza Surf Academy to raise funds for the family of the most recent victim Luyolo Mangeni, 17, who died last week Friday in the second attack in as many months.
Wavescape readers are urged to pledge their support for Luyolo's family, and also to consider making a donation to the Iliza Surf Academy, who will be using the funds to research ways to prevent future attacks on their development surfers, including the purchase of shark pods or shark shields. This equipment is expensive, so please, if you can, give a bit towards them.
A government-appointed task team as been set up to determine reasons for the attacks. Residents say that shark nets are unlikely to be installed due to the wild and rocky nature of the coastline, and the expense of maintaining them.
Wavescape has set up a fund for Luyolo's family through our friends Givengain.com and the Amapondo Children's fund (NPO in Port St Johns). |
