The One Love Studio from Muizenberg, Cape Town, are working with Masiphumelele kids on a board for the Wavescape Surfboard Exhibition and Auction. The unique workshop aims to boost consciousness through art, such as photography, painting drawing and stencil work.
“We’ve done three workshops with the kids using photography, then making stencils of the photos and then letting the kids express themselves openly with markers on the boards. Says Claire Homewood of The One Love Studio.
“We have focused on the theme of freedom of expression and the processes and questions involved in expressing oneself, such as what it is to be free/ not free, knowing your rights and the responsibility that comes with these rights.”
"We got the kids to write all over the board and freely express themselves after we did a workshop on what the Constitution says about Freedom of Expression and what that actually means.
"Then we designed two characters, based on expressive hand gestures made up by the kids during the workshop. Top side by Sergio (Rinquest) and Fin side by Claire – continuing the theme of expressing ourselves. Claire wanted to talk about Water and reflect on the importance of being more Water conscious and developing more creative and sustainable solutions for Cape Town.
"Sergio was inspired by surfing at Muizenberg, the view from the back line, graffiti, the kids and the messages they wrote during the workshop. He left all the original writings of the kids as the fill of his character.
"On World Aids Day we presented the finished board to the kids in Masi along with Desmond Tutu who thought the board was ‘wonderful!’
"The finished art work will be exhibited and sold at the Wavescape Art Auction on the 8th December, with proceeds going to the Isiqalo foundation to buy much needed surfing supplies for the foundation."
