The Poll

Would you put a Kulula sticker on your stick if it went free?

One of the painted Pottz 80s twin fins at the Wavescape Surfboard Art Exhibition that went live today comes from a collaboration between Tim Cornibear, Claire Homewood and development surfers from the Ticket To Ride Foundation, Masiphumulele. All paint was donated by ProNature, producer of eco-friendly, non-toxic and natural paints. It lies on display at Depasco Cafe, Cape Town, from 1 to 8 December, when it will be auctioned for ocean charity. Click here for more.

The board is the outcome of a process that began by taking five young surfers to see the nature documentary film Oceans. The boys then created collages from old magazines depicting their impressions of the film. Painting day one saw blue covered fingers working textures of the seas’ salty waters onto the boards’ surface. Painting day two and armed with chopsticks and paintbrushes, the boys scratched and painted into the shapes left by stencils I had made from their collages. Painting day 3 allowed them to use their collages as reference material and create their own shapes of underwater life.

Then it was my turn: fish scales provided an overall design to contain the boys’ work. On top I have painted images from a project I began in London in 2008 called the Collage Mural Project. This continuing project facilitates groups of people to use old magazines to create individual collages which are then added to a giant collage mural. The project centers around the environment and change, be that climate, social, internal, or planetary.

Overall our board reminds us that if we want to keep riding waves and enjoying our oceans we need to adjust our behavior collectively. Get ready to ride waves of change whilst nurturing a vision for where we want to go.
