The Wavescape Surf Film Festival has announced the addition of Quiksilver as official surfing sponsor for the summer leg of the event in Cape Town.

Wavescape founder Spike said: "With the most varied lineup of films and art boards yet, we are proud to be associated with Quiksilver, who continue to fly the flag for the roots of surf culture in a year that presided over the achievement of 10 world titles by their remarkable team rider, Kelly Slater."

This year in the ASP World Championship Tour, K10 saw off a hot crop of youngsters, particularly South African sensation Jordy Smith, who placed second. The often outrageous skills of the young guard, including Smith, Dane Reynolds, Jamie O'Brien, Julian Wilson and Dusty Payne are specifically illustrated in three of the 15 films at Wavescape: Scratching the Surface, Who is JOB? and Modern Collective.

“Quiksilver are extremely excited to be part of the surf film festival this year. It is great that Wavescape and all the sponsors have put in the effort once again to bring us these unreal films. Besides surfers, all members of the public are encouraged to get involved to get a taste of what the lifestyle has to offer,” said Quiksilver Marketing Manager Dane Patterson.

Presented by the Save Our Seas Foundation, the festival (from December 1 to 19) also works to highlight the critical plight of the world’s oceans, and to foster surfing development in South Africa.

The festival - also supported by Pick ‘n Pay, Men’s Health, Cape Times, 2oceansvibe Radio, and Wavescape.co.za - begins with the Wavescape Surfboard Art Exhibition from December 1 to 7 at the trendy Cape Town restaurant Depasco Cafe. Eleven surfboards decorated by artists go on auction on December 8.

Proceeds go to ocean charities, including the NSRI and Shark Spotters, with a special board decorated by township kids to be auctioned on behalf of the Ticket to Ride Foundation’s surfing development programme. In a special addition on Thursday 8 December this year, Wavescape and Ticket to Ride Foundation will present two films about how surfing can transform the lives of the disadvantaged: Surfing Favela (Brazil) and Somewhere in Tapachula (Mexico).

The main film section of the festival begins with the open-air free screening of Scratching the Surface on Clifton Fourth Beach on Friday December 10 after the sun goes down. The film includes footage filmed with the pioneering High Definition Phantom Cam.

Thousands of like-minded people gather on the beach with picnics from early in the evening to enjoy a long, languid summer evening. Indoor films - many utilising Blu Ray technology for a more enriched viewing experience, will be screened at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay from December 12 to 15 and at the Labia Theatre on Orange from December 16 to 19. These include award-winning documentaries Sea of Darkness, Lives of the Artists, Last Paradise and Fibreglass and Megapixels.Giveaways by Quiksilver, Roxy, complimentary tickets to the festival, a Clayton surfboard, surf lessons by Learn 2 Surf, Sector 9 skateboards and meal vouchers from Kauai will be handed to the audience at the screenings.

To end the festival on a sobering note, Wavescape has partnered with Pick ‘n Pay for a special screening of End of the Line, the scary documentary about the extinction of fish that has caused a global stir. The film will be followed by a panel discussion by experts in the fields of marine science and fisheries.

Films are free at Clifton Fourth Beach, and R30 per person at the Labia and Brass Bell. For details, call the infoline 079 0260 669 or visit www.wavescape.co.za
