Time to dust off the 80’s thruster, get the day-glo out and get down to Llandudno for the Rolling Retro contest/beach party. If last year was anything to go by, get ready for an awesome event.

In 2006 Robby McDonald (Vudu Surf) and Kai Linder (TheGoodLife) ran the first Retro Surf Day at Llandudno Lifesaving Club.

The concept was to make use of Robby’s extensive retro surfboard collection and do a fun day for the local community in Llandudno and Hout Bay – specifically the surf community. The event was a great success, primarily due to the fact that there was no competition as such, just a day of fun in the surf with Retro Boards. Ladies, groms, super stars, Big Wave surfers and locals all surfed together and everyone received a prize.

In 2010, Kai moved back to Llandudno after 3 years living away and along with Robby and Andrew “Roosta’ Lange decided it would be a great idea to revive the Retro Contest. At this point RVCA were approached, as Roosta’s sponsor, and they decided to come on board, sponsoring prizes for the day in the form of product.

The 2011 event was held in mid-January and was widely regarded as one of the most successful surf events to ever be held in South Africa, with massive exposure through Kai’s TV Show, theGoodLife (Supersport), Wavescape SA (Online Surf Portal), Radio 5 and ZigZag Surfing Magazine.  Every person who entered the Retro was given a “Prize” and specialty prizes were awarded for the best dressed, best retro board, best retro wetsuit and of course the best wave of the day, which was won by Michael Grendon.

For 2012 the Rolling Retro returns, bigger, more organized and with a great line up of Sponsors and media support. The event will have full SSA accreditation and the full support of the Llandudno Lifesaving Club – Vudu are a sponsor of the club and receive 1 day per year to do this event.  Once again in 2012, the Rolling Retro will be a fun day out for the surf community. It is not a contest! Everyone surfs, everyone wins!

Roosta, “The Rolling Retro takes the “Con” out of contest!”

LLandudno Lifesaving:

The Lifesaving Club allowed us to run the event in previous years, due to it being a local event and the fact that the Club raises funds through the food and bar sales. In 2011, the Club raised much-needed funds for keeping the Club operational and saving lives in the waters around Llandudno.

2012:

The Retro is not a contest, but a fun day of surfing on retro surfboards - Supplied by Vudu Surf - with everyone from Groms, to the ladies and even the Pros surfing together and having a good time. Proudly supported by RVCA, Vudu Surf and Red Bull.

We have loads of give aways and prizes for everyone throughout the day and there is also a Retro Replica from Vudu Surf that all entrants will go into the draw to win. This one of a kind retro board will have the 2012 Rolling Retro artwork on it.
