In a big boost for South African women’s surfing, East Londoners Rosy Hodge, 22, and Nikita Robb, 20, have qualified for the 2010 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour.
Hodge made the cut for the third year in a row as she seeded 10th on the WCT rankings after the last event of the 2009 Tour this week, the Billabong Pro Maui.
Robb will be a WCT rookie but has potential. Robb, seeded 9th on the final 2009 WQS ratings, scored a spot on the tour after three of the top six (who qualify for the tour), also happened to be among the top 10 on the WCT who automatically re-qualify (Coco Ho, Paige Hareb and Rebecca Woods).
What this does for women’s surfing in South Africa is amazing as it shows that with dedication and a passion for the lifestyle – not to mention hard work and surfing your heart out – anything is possible. It is the first year ever that will see South Africa with two representatives on the female circuit.
“We are stoked for these two ladies and what their achievement represents for women’s surfing in this country. We wish them the very best for the year ahead. The fact that they have been great friends since they were little will no doubt help them to support and push each other through this demanding adventure, and Saltwater GIRL will be behind them all the way.” says Mea Trenor, editor of Saltwater GIRL
The ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT) sees 17 of the world’s top female surfers compete in 7 events around the world for the prestigious title of ASP Women’s World Champion. Stephanie Gilmore has clinched the title for the third year in a row this year.
